The FIP – Forgot Important People

By Ron Allen

The Federation of International Polo recently concluded their annual meeting in Argentina and then issued a press release patting themselves on the back for their continued, limited, accomplishments on the world polo stage. Granted the FIP World Championship games are a major success in terms of an important tournament which spans the globe to ignite further interest in the sport.

If you closely examine their photo from the last meeting, you will notice that there are no women and there are no young people on the board. A lack of representation of these two vital groups sends a clear message that this group continues to be out of touch with the real polo world. Especially when you consider the recent explosion of women’s polo and the fact that younger men make up the bulk of today's the high goal players.

When the FIP was launched 44 years ago their primary mission was to get polo back in The Olympics. A lofty but impossible goal. They also vowed to create uniform worldwide handicaps and to come up with a set of rules which would be applied universally. Perhaps they are still working on that.

Welcome to 2026 FIP.
